Brain male or female

Posted on 2007.11.26 at 16:36

We had to take a test that told us by answering a few questions which way our brain thinks.  Either male or female.  After answering the questions the results showed that my brain thinks like a female.  Which I guess is a good thing.  So this test shows me that women are better at having a good visual memory and can distinguish between subtle hints and details.  I did find that the few questions that i got wrong were harder for me to answer than the ones that i got correct.  I don't know if i had to do with the fact that we only had a few seconds to answer each question so i was just making impulse answers or what it exactly was.

Then for the next test we had to submit a piece of writing.  This site would then evaluate the writing and tell the writer which way they write more like.  My results for this test shows that I write more like a female.  This shows that I use more words that are feminine keywords than i use masculine words.  When my writing was evaluated my scores were very close to both a male writer or a female writer.  I don't think I would have been happier one way or the other because I don't really think that there is a right or a wrong way to writing a paper when being a male or a female.

The Female Factor

Posted on 2007.11.13 at 15:02
For Ralph's show in Central Park in September, the only thing being seen on the runway was clothes worn by Women.  Ralph Lauren told WWD days before the show that " I think I've shown men's and women's together maybe once or twice, and I think it somehow get confusing."  Ralph is very serious when it comes to his women's business.  He may seem to be deeper into men's since that is that line is the one which leads the way for the company.  However, the women's line isn't too far behind.

Buffy Birrittella is the executive vice president in charge of women's design and advertising.  The women's lines are closing in on the men's, and Rugby's women's line is even bigger than men's already.  Birrittella has been working with Ralph for over thirty years now so she knows what she is doing when it comes to women's clothing.   Since she has been working there for so long she has "learned to speak the Lauren language fluently."    Also while being there Ralph Lauren has grown to trust her instincts like his own.

Birrittella works on all the collections from Lauren Ralph Lauren to Black Label, Blue Label, Rugby and Collection.  She always sits down and presents her ideas to Ralph where they will discuss all the concepts to the line.  The only line that Ralph is very picky about his is Collection line where he is at every fitting and picking out every little detail.  On the others he trust Birrittella and her concepts.

Standing Out For the Scrum

Posted on 2007.11.13 at 14:43
One of the newest lines from Ralph Lauren is Rugby, and its "ready for a rollout."  This line is made for a younger audience and it is also a lower price range compared to the rest of Ralph's lines.  Rugby is currently in ten stores here in the U.S., but now the company is wanting to expand it here and even taking it overseas.  Rugby was first directed to the college market when it first store opened in October of 2004, but it has broadened its spectrum in the past few years.  Also right now you can only find Rugby in store but by early next year customers will be able to find it online.

With the three years of sales the company has now seen that the customers buying it are individuals of all ages. They find that right now this line appeals to individuals who are in their 30s, who are "young at heart and contemporary in their thinking." Right now this line is still in its beginning phases since people are still finding out about it since it is not available all over the U.S.   The stores are composed of mostly women's clothes but not by much with a 60/40 ratio.

The merchandise has authentic detailing and is usually inspired by vintage designs.  The collection is said to be "flavored by old-school inspiration, nostalgic athleticism and modern-day eclectic prep."  One vendor has said that "it's priced right, it's fun, it's young.  It's like the old university Shop used to be 40 years ago, but with a 2007 sensibility."

Scent of Success

Posted on 2007.11.13 at 14:24

Not only is Ralph Lauren know for all his different clothing lines he puts out, but he a big name in the fragrances department too.  Ralph has remained in the top of the department stores ranking over the past few years.  He does this by introducing new fragrances but also by updating past scents that have remained a classic among its shoppers.  Since 1984 Ralph has been partnered with L'Oreal.  And since then they have launched 22 different scents under the "Ralph Lauren umbrella".  This is divided into three different sections which are: Polo, Romance, and Ralph.  All of these scents are sold all over the world in 150 different countries.

Over the past 40 years Ralph has been "central in building and developing the aspirational spirit that is the essence of designer fragrances."  Last year in the U.S. alone sales were about $230 million.  And with the launch of over 700 scents over the past three year, Ralph remains one of the top five in both men's and women's prestige categories.

Last year Ralphs Polo Blue and Polo Black as being number two and three in the men's fragrances last year in the South Atlantic states.

Elizabeth Morello says that " the brand is well positioned for continued growth since it is ture to its roots.  When launching new fragrances, the company always stays within its classic format--a big reason for their success."  And according to her men's fragrances are growing fast than woman's with the launch of three new scents.

"My Favorite Year"

Posted on 2007.11.13 at 14:09

Ralph Lauren has described this year as "like a dream".  Ralph can not believe that he is living this life after the fourty years that he has been in production.  One memorable moment for Ralph in the year 2007 is when he and his family went over to Russia to open two stores in Moscow.  By opening these two stores it brings the Ralph Lauren lifestyle over there for the first time.  Ralph was nervous at first with going over there because he didn't know what russia would be like.  He wasn't sure what the tone was going to be over there, but he found it very exciting and energetic.  Then a few weeks later after returning home Ralph was honored with the Council of Fashion Designers of America's first American Legend Award.  That night he was also honored by winning te menswear designer of the year award.  Ralph Laruen loves the feeling of being called a legend.  He even jokes around about how he could even change his last name to it.

With the approach of Polo's 40th anniversary, individuals could spot Ralph picture on many magazines.  A few to mention are Men's Vogue, GQ Russia and GQ Japan, Esquire and Fortune.

For the Spring show and gala, Ralph had a tent at the Conservatory Garden in New York.  The Show was amazing and finished with a standing ovation.  Afterwards there was a dinner to show his appreciation.  He said he started in New York so why not celebrate with a big party there.

What he did in 2006

Posted on 2007.11.11 at 14:30

Every year Ralph does many things that he gets recognized for.  On March 8, Ralph partnered up with the All England Club and Wimbledon and announced that they were the offical outfitter for wimbledon through 2010.  In the 129 years of Wimbledon Ralph has become the first designer ever to "create and outfit all on-court officials including chair umpires, line umpires, and ball persons."   This will take the Ralph Lauren name even farther than it already has come, because now people will see his name on everyday people.  His clothes will then be shown off on television for everyone to see.

A few weeks later, on March 29 Ralph opened a 24,000 square foot flagship store in the shopping area of Tokyo, Japan.  This store has the full range of lines that is offered by Ralph as well as "an exclusive, limited-edition collection of exquisite handbags and accessories."

Days later Ralphs name appeared all across the world in Time magazine.  He had been voted as one of the world's one hundred most influential people.

Months past by and finally on August 7, Ralph unveils an "innovated interactive shopping experience."  What this is is an image with touch sensory technology that is projected on the window on a New York store.  This then allows individuals to shop all hours of the day and every day of the week.  So when your running late or just have to get that shopping done. Individuals can go to the store at all hours and "windown shop".

Ralph Laurens help to fight cancer.

Posted on 2007.11.11 at 14:09
Over the past few years Ralph has done a lot for the world besides just supplying the world with new fashionable clothing.  Ralph has started the Pink Pony Line which supports the fight against cancer.  With the Pink Pony line ten percent of all the profits from this line go into the Pink Pony Fund which is for the care and prevention of cancer.  Another thing that Ralph has done to help is he has opened in 2003 The Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention whic is located in Harlem.

The Pink Pony Campaign supports programs "for early diagnosis, education, treatment and reasearch and is deticated to bringing patient navigation and quality cancer care to medically underserved communties."

One thing that stand out with the Center for cancer care and prevention is that they help patients and families access the health care services and make sure that they don't get lost in all the complexities of the system.  Many families get scared when they have to deal with all the things that come along with getting treated for cancer, and this center is supposed to make it easier and not as scary for these families.

One thing that Ralph Lauren says that meny people can relate to is that "Brest cancer is not just a women's issue- it affects all of us: the brothers, husbands, fathers, children, frineds. Pink Pony is our effort in the Fight against cancer."

Progress Report

Posted on 2007.11.07 at 14:14
So with more than half the semester done I can finally say that I think i have a handel on the paper and exactly where i'm going to go with it.  I decided last week or so to make the final paper about Ralph Lauren and the 40 years that hes been in business. I'm just going to talk about his different lines and everything that hes done with everything since the start. At first i thought it was going to be hard to just write about just one person for the whole semester but i've found that its actually not as bad due to the fact that this years is a huge year with him.

So now with the small papers all done now its time to start concentrating on the big ones and the power point.  I haven't even started on any of the other papers but i have only gotten about four slides done but that shouldn't be too hard.  So i'm hoping that everything will just fall into place and the end of the semester will be easy and pass by fast.

Fourty years in business

Posted on 2007.11.04 at 18:59

This year marks the fortieth anniversary of Ralph Lauren’s Polo brand.  So this past month Ralph Lauren has been notice in Women’s Wear Dailey, Men’s Vogue, Fortune, Town & Country, GQ Russia, and about another five magazines for his great accomplishments in the fashion industry.  So the designer on everyone’s mind these past few months has been Ralph Lauren.

Back when Ralph was first starting out, his “first splurge was a white convertible” (Men’s Vogue 156). Like most individuals Ralph had to buy something to show of his success among his peers.  Now that Ralph has been in business for forty years he has “what has become the world’s greatest car collection” (Men’s Vogue 156), which has over 50 cars that most people dream of even owning.

Ralph has always been a hard working man in order to make a name out of him with something that he has loved ever since a young man.  Now at the age of 67 he is a household name in American.  Even though he could stop working and sit back an enjoy life that is not in his nature. However, Ralph is “looking straight ahead rather than for an exit (or even a rest stop), expanding his $11 billion business into Europe, Asia, and even Russia” (Men’s Vogue 156).  Many people today look at Ralph Lauren as someone who understands fashion who is an “Ambassador or Americana” (Men’s Vogue 156) among many different people.  So Ralph has come to believe that he has “built something beyond the fashion business” (Men’s Vogue 156).

Since Ralph has been such a major influence in the Fashion industry Women’s Wear Daily decided to devote a whole issue to Ralph and his forty years of success.  Within this issue there are many ads that other retail individuals have taken there time to applaud Ralph in his forth years of business.  It is a great accomplishment because his company has been going strong within these forty years.

Ralph exclaimed that he can’t believe he is living this life after his 40th anniversary gala that took place during New York Fashion Week (My Favorite Year 62).  This past year has had many memorable moments for Ralph.  In May he open two new stores in Russia which will bring the Polo brand over there for the first time (My Favorite Year 62).

Many big names in the industry have only good things to say about Ralph and the brand that he has made.  Marc Gobé says that “Ralph is one of the designers who has an understanding of the psyche of his customers.  He crystallized the American style, and nobody had done it before…nobody in an aggregate, with a total point of view, from what you wear to the type of house you live in” (Inventing 46).  Neil Kraft said that “Nobody has done it for longer or more consistently or as well as Ralph has.  The key has been his unswerving consistency” (Inventing 46).

So no matter how famous Ralph Lauren is he never lets it get to where he forgets the important things in our life. One thing over the past few years that Ralph has started to do is help out a good cause and give back to America.  He has started many programs across American two of which are the Center for Cancer Care and Prevention and also his Pink Pony campaign. Ralph is trying to make a change in this world among many different things, and I think he has done it. Everyone will always remember Ralph for his clothes and even for his impact on trying to make a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer

Ralph Lauren Home collections

Posted on 2007.10.29 at 18:00
Not only does Ralph Lauren do clothing and fragrances but he also does products for household.  He has three different collections in which you can buy many different products from.  All three of these lines are different and very elegant at the same time. The different lines are St. Germain, Noble Estate, and Modern Chairman.  All three of these lines are fairly expensive ranging anywhere from two thousand to twenty-two thousand depending on exactly what is purchased and from the collection that an individual buys it from. So here is a brief description of the collections.

The St. German collection is "rustic and refined which are gracefully intertwined to fashion a chic, picturesque retreat, featuring European provincial furniture, industrial elements and weathered rough-hewn materials."

The Noble Estate collection is "steeped in tradition with a thorughbread spirit and a modern twist, sumptuous fabrics in vibrant jewel tones mix with elegant mahogany and black lacquer furnishings."

And the final collection of these three is the Modern Chairman which is a sophisticated menswear patterns, sleek sportscar motifs and deco-inspired accents enrich streamlined rosewood furnishings and a classic palette of navy and aubergine."

So no matter how someone is designing their rooms, they can be sure that they can find something from the Ralph Lauren home collections as long as they are willing to pay the cost of these lovely pieces of furniture.

what is my final paper

Posted on 2007.10.24 at 19:29
When writing my final paper i would say that this paper is going to be an expository which is where i will just be informing people about my topic. So I'll be telling about the life and accomplishments of Ralph Lauren over the past fourty years and even how some of his lines came to start that most people didn't even know that he makes.  I hope that with my paper it will inform many people about Ralph and things that he has done that most people had no idea about.  I know that with doing this project I have learned many things about Ralph and that the start of his company didn't come easy and took a lot of work but, after all that work he has made a great name out of himself.

This paper clearly couldn't be a persuasive piece because there isn't really isn't anything to try and persuade. I know that I can't persuade people to start shopping Ralph or to even look up facts about him.   I mean I do hope by writing this paper that people will look at this clothing more and all the things that he does have for sale out there but the main point of this paper is just to inform about Ralph, becuase he is such a great designer and has does so much for the industry over the years.  Ralph Lauren is a man that everyone should know about, because he does more for the world that just designing some amazing clothing.

Womenswear

Posted on 2007.10.17 at 18:32

During the beginning of the 1970s Ralph Lauren decided to make his womenswear line. He got the idea for this because his wife use to go into mens clothing stores in search for shirts that she could then dress up for her self. So Ralph decided that he wanted to make a collection that was just for his wife, something that she could not wear. So thats when his womenswear kicked off in 1970.

Ralph had been noticing that there wasn't that tailored look for women like there was for men so he wanted to do that and allow women to have that masculine-feminine look becuase he believe that to be very sexy.  Ralphs new tailored line got attention because of the new look that he was putting out there.  So Ralphs line of womens wear became a big hit because of the fabrics that he used in desiging these pieces.  Also the designs on the new pieces that he was putting out there got him known all around. Also Ralph had a whole sportswear collection to offer for women and he was the first to offer these which brought his name out there even more, becasue many women were now shopping within polo because they wanted that nice fitting look that they had never gotten before from other designers.

With the start of the womens clothing line also brought the beginning of the symbol that we now associate with Ralph Lauren.  The Polo Player.  This was first seen on the cuffs of the womens shirts and now can be seen on almost everything that Ralph makes.

Writing Tips

Posted on 2007.10.10 at 18:13
Current Mood: cold

So we had to read a few different articles that gave us advice on writing. I read the one that was The only general writing advice that you'll ever need.  I found this acticle to be very interesting.  They talk about how repitition is always good and it is. When you hear things over and over it stays with you. In this article they would state things over but in a different way but so you understood it was the same idea.

One part of this article told about how to get writing.  I'm the type of person that when i sit down at the computer it takes me forever to start writing the paper. But its like once i get writing i can usually finish the paper that day.  I liked the fact that they said write about whatever you want just to write and just to get your mind going.  A lot of their ideas are good but i don't think that i would actually do any of them.  I'm not the person to just sit down and write every day.  I would only write a paper or anything when I need to write it.  I do read, but a lot of the time the only books that i read are the ones for class. I find that i would read a magazine more but at least i'm still reading.  I think that it does help however when you read your paper out loud because you do find more mistakes than you would when you read it just in your head becasue you won't notice as many mistakes.

Dihydrogen Monoxide

Current Mood: cold
During this lesson the teacher wanted us to learn the difference between the right and wrong sites that should be used when writing a paper.  The site that we had to look at was about dihydrogen monoxide, and we were supposed to state if this site was a good accurate one or not.   I decided that I would not use this as an accurate site when typing a paper.  The site was written by an individual and it even states at the bottom who it was written by. But all the information that he was giving was false.  Dihydrogen Monoxide is not a colorless odorless chemical compound.  When in reality its just water.  its made of two hydrogen and one oxygen..resulting in H2O

Terry Pratchett's six novels in the City Watch arc of the Discworld series are very carefully assembled, multi-layered satirical constructs, performing fantastic variations on Horatian and Juvenalian satire as well as other satirical modes aimed at various targets. The City Watch arc, composed of the titles Guards! Guards!, Men at Arms, Feet of Clay, Jingo, The Fifth Elephant, and the newly published Night Watch, are all parodies of not only fantasy but hardboiled detective novels.

Pratchett parodies and satirizes (sometimes simultaneously, sometimes by turns) much of the popular "sword and sorcery" fantasy and "dragons, dragons, everywhere" fantasy published since Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Nor does he spare Tolkien; but the satire aimed at fantasy novels, excepting the truly dreadful ones, is of the gentle, reflective Horatian type in which readers are urged to laugh quietly at the less logical aspects of their favorite novels, as well as at themselves.

1.The six pieces by Terry Pratchett are “not only fantasy but hardboiled detective novels” (Hanes, 1).  If you enjoy the fantasy pieces and are looking for a good laugh then these books are something to look into and read.

2. Terry Pratchett's novels allow readers to jump into the fantasy world that they imagine and at the same time allowed to laugh at what their reading (Hanes, 2).

3.  The Six novels by Terry Pratchett, Guards! Guards!, Men at Arms, Feet of Clay, Jingo, The Fifth Elephant, and Night Watch, have been put together in such an order which allows readers to enjoy everything that Pratchett has in store.  If your into fantasy or even suspensful detective books these are six novels that you would want to check out. (Hanes, 1)

4. Everyone knows of the 16th president Abraham Lincoln, any indiviudal who enjoys reading the fantacy books knows of Terry Pratchett.

5. A citation is going to be in text.  Your going to use that after you have used any information that is not your own.  A works cited page is the last page in your paper with all the pieces of work that you have used in your whole paper.

Ralph Lauren started everything while working in a factory in New York.  It was there that he used this factory and a loan of $50,000 to start his wide tie creations with his brother.  He put his tie line under the name Polo Fashions.  Ralph then put his earnings back into the company and started a larger empire of designs.

Ever since the start of Ralphs company he has become a very powerful company.  He desings anything that you can think of, from sports wear to fancy suits.  After he got started from the wide tie idea, the other design that did it all for him was the polo shirt that became widely known by all.  After this he then expanded in to other division such as womnes wear, footwear and even sports.  There was a time when Ralphs company had a downfall because of what the population wanted to dress like.  Other designers such as Armani and Dolce & Gabbana were getting more attention than he was.  So Ralph then decided that he would make his Blue Labe, which was his classic elegant wear.  This then became a hit of its own among the business suit population and brought the attention back to polo fashions.

Ralphs company is now worth an estimated $1 billion.  Hes is family man and his wife and kid are both very involved in the day to day things that go on in the company.  Ralph still remains the creative designer for this brand today which was expanded into many different divisions.

Peer Editing

Posted on 2007.10.02 at 22:14
So during monday we had to get into a group of three and have everyone read our paper and tell what we wanted them to check in the paper, and afterwards tell what each person saw wrong.

My paper was the first to be edited.  I told everyone that i'm not good at grammar so any help with that would be good.  So Katie got done looking at my paper first and told me that there was something that I could add to make the paper flow better because when first reading the paper it was kind of confusing to follow.  She also gave me the few grammar problems that i had in the paper.  Then kenny finished reading and also just kind of stated the same things, which were just a few word changes to make the paper flow better.  Its funny because when reading my own paper backwards I did find many things that i wanted to change that I probably won't have found if I read the normal because I would have skipped over reading each word and just saw each sentence how i pictured it.

So after my paper we all read [info]katieickes.  She told us that she thought it was choppy and she didn't think it was interesting because it was just facts.  However when i read her paper i thought it was a very well written paper. I only saw about a handful of things that i would have changed but even then they were so small.

Then finally we read [info]kdabneypaper and once again it was a good paper. There was only a few words that I told him I would take out and change.  But he had already before started to change some things so there wasn't tons to change.

I found the editing process to actually be very helpful because it helps for other people to read your paper because they don't really know what your telling.  So when they read it for the first time they are more likely to find mistakes than the writer would because the writer has been looking at that paper for a few days.

My biography was done by [info]kdabney

I decided to do my interview with Kristen, a sophomore at Kent State University. Kristen, originally from Pickerington, OH, is a talented young woman who hopes to fulfill her dreams in fashion. While attending Kent State, she keeps high marks and does the best she can at whatever she does. But before we get into Kristen as a person, let me talk about Kristen’s background.

The Best?

Posted on 2007.09.26 at 18:22

After reading about fifteen journals i had to decide which one i thought was the best. Which one that I thought  was the best at "selling" me their major.  I think i would have to pick   sklima_kent.

Their major in which they are going in to is to help children with learning disabilities. This is the only journal that i would say I wasn't just reading it all just to get to the end.  I feel that this one does that best of explaining their major because people don’t know how many individuals now a day have learning disabilities. So I think that she was right in telling everyone that they should try to help, because everyone should.  And that once you work with these individuals they will impact your life greatly.  I know many people that are now going into fields to help individuals with disabilities because they worked with them, or even because they now have a family member with a learning disability.  Once you experience working with them or living with them they affect you so much.  Seeing that you can bring the biggest smile to their face just makes your day.

I know how it is to deal with children with learning disabilities.   You wouldn't think about it until you actually experience someone with a learning disability.   My best friends little sister has one; she is almost three years old and still hardly talks.  She only says maybe a handful of words.  Every time I go over to their house she just puts the biggest smile on my face.  I'll always sit down and play with her and help her learn to identify different things and she loves it.  She'll smile and laugh because she still knows what you’re talking about, but she just can't say anything to you.   them the biggest hugs because they love spending time with them.
